This Blog is a place for gathering topics and findings that are professionally interesting to me, but also a place for less serious reflections about my daily encounters with the digital world.
This post is only in Finnish. I bought a small sail boat this summer. And this thread will be dedicated to all the things related to it.
Intranet for residents,
I promised to build an intranet site for the residents of our apartment building. The main requirement was that it had to be cheap, or better yet free. I considered two main alternatives – WordPress and Google Sites. Here’s why I chose Google Sites, and a brief summary of its pros and cons.
This is responsive,
I finally made this site responsive. It had been haunting me for a while, but I kept putting it off, since I expected it to be a time consuming project to go through. Well, I was wrong and I should have done it sooner.
First year of Vintage Galleria,
The story of starting up a vintage furniture store from my perspective.
NEDS – North European Design Symposium,
I had the chance to spend one day at the NEDS symposium, which was organized for the first time this year. I was left with mixed feelings about the day.
Virtual toilet wall becomes mGraffiti,
Futurice has picked my original Virtual toilet wall concept for the Nokia Ideas Project: http://www.ideasproject.com/ideas/9881 and they have made it into an app called mGraffiti, for both Windows Phone and Symbian.
Mobile websites vs. responsive design,
Great success for team Crasman at High Tech Run,
The first ever High Tech Run event was organized in Otaniemi by Tietoviikko. 53 teams participated in the 5 runner, 26 kilometer relay run. Our team performed splendidly, finishing in the 5th place with the total time 1:54:10.
No more Bolder,
We are building a rear projection touchscreen hardware/software setup for an art installation. Our group consists of three people: media artist Heidi Tikka, architect Jaakko Pesonen and myself. I will post updates on the stages of the project in this thread.
More about the Virtual Toilet Wall,
Facebook likes FQL Flash reader,
Here’s a small example Flash file for getting the number of likes, shares and mentions of any Url from Facebook, using a FQL http query.
Free lens macro photography,
I tried taking some free lens macro photos. I used a 52mm solid lens that I held backwards in front of my Nikon D7000.
Jakob Nielsen – Usability of iPad Apps and Websites,
Jakob Nielsen and Raluca Budiu, recently published the 2nd edition of their report on the usability of iPad apps and websites. You can find it online here. The 129 page report uses a set of casestudies to illustrate the dos and don’ts of designing content for the iPad. It also offers some good general insight on designing for touch screen devices.
The Use of Storytelling in Music Artist Promotion,
I just finished reading Pekka Hartikainen’s thesis: “The Use of Storytelling in Music Artist Promotion”. It’s a study that describes how contemporary musicians are becoming increasingly active and available for their fans, and using storytelling to build their character. Hartikainen also suggests strategies for artist promotion and storytelling in todays media world.
Working full time at Bolder,
Starting this monday I’m working full time at Bolder.
Flash font embedding,
Having trouble with dynamic font embedding and CSS styles in AS3/Flash CS5?
So I finally redesigned my website. In the new site I wanted to reconsider the focus of the pages. I removed some unnecessary pages and combined others. I also wanted a proper blog section. Perhaps this way I’ll be more motivated to update more frequently.
Instant photo annotation,
Within the time of two weeks, I’ve heard engineers and researchers in two different conferences (ACM & ICIDS) talking about the importance of annotation and ontologies. In the case of personal photography this would mean adding metadata to pictures about where and when a picture was taken and who are the people in them. Read more
The Holy Grail of hiding the mouse cursor in OS X,
This is perhaps a bit off the topic I’ve set for this page, but…
I recently ran into the most surprising problem, one which I couldn’t find a solution to anywhere on the internet. I needed to automatically hide the mouse cursor on an installation machine when it restarts.
Icon taxonomy in interface design,
I found this article: A survey of icon taxonomy used in the interface design by Wang Hsiu-Feng, Hung Sheng-Hsiung and Liao Ching-Chih. Which is a good overview and comparison of the different systems that have been suggested for icon taxonomy.
Corporate logos and interface icons,
Designing logos for companies has a lot in common with designing interface icons. Specially when it comes to pictorial logos, like those of Apple, Twitter or Lacoste. These logos are recognizable literal images that have been simplified and stylized (Wheeler, Designing Brand Identity).
